Freshman Electives

Welcome, Class of 2028!

Freshmen typically have room in their class schedule for one or two electives. Please review the list below and come to your registration appointment with a few choices in mind.

Electives

Unless otherwise noted, the following electives meet for a semester. Click the course titles to expand the descriptions.

Co-Curricular Courses - Band

Band is open to students from St. Edward, St. Joseph Academy, or Magnificat, and no musical experience is necessary! Band at St. Edward is co-curricular; meaning classes are pass/fail and meet after school instead of during the school day. Freshmen can register for Symphonic Band, Marching Band, or both, in addition to their seven scheduled courses.

Symphonic Band - This instrumental music ensemble studies concert literature and performs at OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Event, in addition to three other concerts during the Spring semester. Class meets after school three days a week from the end of the second quarter (following marching band) through the fourth quarter.

Marching Band - Marching Band combines musical performance and visual movement. The band performs at football games, parades, and band competitions throughout the summer and fall. Rehearsals begin in June before the start of the school year. Band camp is held the last week of July and the first full week of August. During football season, full band rehearsals are held regularly on Tuesday evenings and Thursday and Friday afternoons.

Virtual Health Class

Students are required to take ½ credit of health before their junior year. While the course is offered as an elective, many students choose to earn their credit online over the summer. Silicon Valley High School offers a graded course for $125. This entirely virtual, asynchronous class includes videos and tutorials that take approximately 15 hours to complete; students can do it at their own pace. Click here to learn more and register.
